How To Contact Elected Official

To write your Congressional Representative or Senator via the Internet visit: http://www.house.gov/writerep/

Remember:

1. Be Concise: Keep your correspondence to one page in length and state the purpose of your letter.

2. Identify Yourself: Give your name and whether or not you are a constituent.

3. Be Specific: If you are writing in regards to specific legislation use the bill number, or if you are writing on a particular interest express why it is important to you. Be sure to include factual data in your letter to support your concerns and opinions.

4. Ask for Action: Ask your representative to take a specific action regarding the purpose of your letter.

5. Contact Information: Include contact information for your legislator to respond.

6. Handwrite: If your letter is not time sensitive, handwrite it. Handwritten letters typically get more attention.

For a Senator:

     Greeting: Dear Senator _____________

For a Representative:
